To honor the fifth day of Chanukah and celebrate Five Meals with Five Ingredients in Five Days, I thought I’d give a little gelt-love. With nary a Menorah or shamash in sight, I’m nonetheless paying due respect for the Festival of Lights with little chocolate coins wrapped in gold and silver foil.
Otherwise known as Chanukah gelt, these cacao-bean-based discs serve in place of precious-metal coins as gifts for children. And, for this shiksa, the feel-good confections featured here are a fair-trade, organic fête! Much thanks to my boyfriend, who stuffed his coat pockets full of these lovelies while at a party at the Contemporary Jewish Museum last night—-he brought home this treasure chest of gold coins to me.
