Frühstück | Breakfast in Berlin

Berliners are all-around great. To help-out a nice American girl, they will rent you a fancy, private flat for next-to-nothing; in the name of new friendship, they will keep you out past your bedtime, sucking Black Russians and dancing to heavy electronic beats; to welcome you to the neighborhood, they will invite you over for an artful, elegant brunch. This means super-fresh and delightfully-simple. Just the way I like it.

On this occasion, we set a proper breakfast table with slices of bakery-fresh Berlinishce Bread. German loaves are gorgeous and delicious. Prepared with a full-grain flour that retains the tasty, nutrient-rich bran and germ, these dark-brown breads—unlike baguettes or levains or shitty grocery-store breads—are a treasure-trove of proteins and essential omega-3 fatty acids. Unrefined, whole-wheat flour is 100-percent good-for-you, with complex flavors, vitamins, and minerals. Screw Atkins!

Along with Israeli-grown cucumber and tomato, we snagged two lovely cheeses, dill-and-garlic green olives from the Turkish market up the street, and Swiss chard—I’m such a sucker for dark, leafy greens. Stacked atop one another, these ingredients come together as a tasteful—and tasty—start-your-day. Happy frühstück (breakfast)!

I’m not a health nut yet; I’m one of those people who has a very good sense of what I should eat, and doesn’t eat these things because I’m in my car, or tranporting myself to and from teaching, or prepping, or something. I’m also a yoga teacher who is stuck with old habits…I’ve never eaten breakfast regularly in my life so I’m starting simple.

    Anyways, I love the simplicity of the meals you present. They look amazing.
    I’m excited to try some of them.
